Sad when someone as talented as Melendez, who wanted to be a court painter in Spain, during the 1770’s, only not to succeed, and die in poverty.

Thinking about What’s Natural



Just thinking about Jean Baptiste Greuze “Aegina Visted by Jupiter” here at Metropolitan.
Aegina is unfinished, and I like it that way, better.
How much good painting and natural feeling gets covered up by trying to paint to please someone else, like the French Royal Academy.
And how lucky we are, Greuze never finished this painting.

A Start 2

I brought “A Start” much further this afternoon and evening by working over my acrylic underpainting with oil pastels.

I still don’t think it’s done yet.   Yesterday, “A Start” was begun (see below)

In a way, some of the contrast in the yesterday’s version was lost today – in the next and hopefully, final session, next week, [...]

LA Painting

Don’t know why but I named this work after LA, maybe because, for some reason, I was thinking of Los Angeles when I worked on this study.

Two Things
