Escif show at Pictures On Walls

If you’ve seen Banksy’s Exit Through The Gift Shop or even just the new extended trailer for the film you’ll have seen one of the funniest moments – graffiti artist Escif getting arrested in quite ridulculous head gear while painting a wall. Other (slightly more calm) moments can be seen on his youtube channel which can be found here. The good news is that he’s still at large and Pictures On Walls are shortly bringing him over from Spain for a solo show (‘Around The Wall’) at their Commercial Street premises in Aldgate. The event runs from 17th April to the 30th April (check on picturesonwalls.com for the latest updates on particular opening times). In the meantime I’m hoping to see him hitting the streets of London with some quality interventions such as this:

Shit We’re Diggin: The Cement eclipses of Isaac Cordal

businessman.jpg

Artist Statement from Isaac Cordal:

Cement eclipses is a research project about the urban space, in-between sculpture
and photography. Sculpture is used as a starting point and photography as a witness
to the execution of installations for later publishing or exhibition. The small
pieces (25 cm. approx.) are made in cement, then reproduced with silicone molds. The
figurines represent a kind of metamorphosis through which human being leaves his
role of citizen merging with the city and slowly becoming part of urban furniture.
Then confirming its voluntary isolation/alienation from nature, hiding himself among
sidewalks, streets, walls, etc. and transforming little by little the urban
environment in its natural habitat.

This project started in 2006 as a nomad project and as a continuous process, combining urban installation and street art. Cement eclipses was developed in urban
areas of several European cities including Berlin, London, Brussels, Liege,
Barcelona, Vigo, etc. Most of the photographs in this dossier have been realised in
London, where I currently reside, between September 2008 and January 2009.

Shit We’re Diggin: The Art of James Voller

voller1.jpg

Raycroft-1.jpg

Artist Statement:

James Voller is a Wellington based artist whose practice investigates aspects of place, photography and site specific installation. Voller graduated from The University of Canterbury with Bachelor of Fine Art in Photography. His final years work was the successful documentary book and series On my way Home which was shown in the United States and New Zealand. Since then Voller has completed a Master of Fine Arts through The Royal Melbourne Institute Of Technology where he explored site specific installation and reconsidered the role of the camera in his practice resulting in work which questions the role of photograph in contemporary society.

James’s current work looks at shifts in the physical sites around New Zealand and their relevant social histories. Through superimposing photographic imagery of domestic spaces in transitory urban spaces, Voller creates the illusion of housing where none exists, which echos the changes to New Zealanders’ psyche of where and how “home” exists. The works are created as paste ups, transforming the appearance of the actual site.

Since completing his MFA, James has exhibited successfully internationally, both with photographic and installation work, with interest from different areas continuing to grow. He has been a finalist in many national art awards and was awarded the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology Research Art award and has been selected for an Artist in Residence programme in Krems Austria commencing in August 2010 and is continuing on to exhibit in Germany and the United Kingdom.”
