From Logan:

This was the second year we organized the event, and we have plans to continue doing it as long as we can. It was initially started by BooksIIII of Blackbook Stencils, and it grew to include myself, Lynn Yohanna Howard, Landsea Ventures and Spinello Gallery. The concept was simply to provide a space to artists, during Art Basel, to produce outdoor work, uninterrupted by commercial pressures.

When it started, I don’t think that any of us knew how quickly things would grow. Last year we started with about 25 artists. It went well, and we had great coverage, but this year was insane. We started with close to 30 artists, but that number grew to 80 with 3 days. There were over a dozen locations, each of which has several artists. Some locations having several dozen artists. At least 70% of the murals from last year are still up. This year we doubled the number of murals. Next year it’s hard to say where things will take us, but I know that we are planning on organizing things a bit tighter and earlier than the past 2 years. We still need to talk about things, but we have discussed adding a gallery component into the event. Ideally we’d love to have a warehouse where we could do a full on installation.  We also discussed organizing a panel discussion next year so the artists can speak for themselves, their motivations, and the purpose of the event. Regardless of what form the event takes, the main focus will always be outdoor murals so everyone can enjoy them, even after the crowds have left Art Basel.”

Artists Getting Business Savvy

The Art Newspaper spoke with the British artist Keith Tyson about how artists are starting to take control of their career, rather than simply handing the reigns to the art dealer and hoping for the best. It’s a theme that comes up more and more lately.

Here’s a couple quotes from the article..
“Galleries will promise you the world in terms of production costs but it comes at the price of complete control. There’s a conflict of interest in having the people who retail your work being the same people that help you with production because they will try and own it.” Keith Tyson Quote

“The bottom line is that you need to be in the centre making the decisions with the gallery working for you, rather than vice-versa.” Gavin Turk Quote

I have no sympathy for the art dealers. I appreciate that running an art gallery is a tough business, but I’m happy to see them lose some of their power over artists. Most artists will probably still stick to the traditional artist/gallery relationship, but it’s good to know that you don’t have to sell your soul to one art dealer if you don’t want to.

The Internet and business superstars like Damien Hirst and Jeff Koons haven’t been good for traditional art dealers. It makes me think of the music business and their unwillingness to change.

The Holiday Art Sale Season… 48.5% off a Basquiat… My How times have changed!

The Holiday Art Sales… 48.5% off a Basquiat… My How times have changed! It’s quite amazing how fast the art world can adjust to these difficult impossibe changing times. We have to say.. MAO was RIGHT not surprised how “Discount” become the most popular word uttered at Art Basel Miami Beach 2008. But clearly.. this is the time of stress for the private art dealer community. It would seem, rumors of gallery closings has quickly become the newest sport in the gutters streets of Cheslea these days. In fact, some tenatious people are resorting to new and interesting sales techniques……

At what cost, production?

The Art Newspaper leads today with a piece by Louisa Buck about “Artists Clawing Back Control From Dealers.” If the title is a bit hyperbolic, the article itself is a measured account of how artists such as Kieth Tyson and Gavin Turk have begun hiring financial advisors and forming their own …

Art Books and Art Blog

Just so you know, I’m not dead, lost, imprisoned, or in a mental institute. I just needed a break and lots of ME time. Those that know me think I already have too much ME time, but I don’t think you can ever have enough of it ;-)

A blog is a greedy beast that is never satisfied and I just decided to stop feeding her for a few days, which turned into a few weeks. I guess I was angry at Art News Blog for making me feel responsible to her, but we have made up and resolved our issues.

So, things will now be back to normal or as normal as they can be.

While away I have been painting and reading books about painting, which has been great. I went on an art book buying spree at Amazon and spent hundreds of dollars. I created a wish list at Amazon and realized that if I didn’t buy the books for myself, they’re not going to magically appear on my bookshelf one day! I felt guilty after buying so many books at one time, but I loved hearing the delivery van pulling up out the front with more new books for three consecutive days!

Here’s a few of them.. (they’re afilliate links from Amazon as I have to feed my art book addiction somehow!)

The rest are mostly diary/journal/info/bio type books on or by artists like Matisse, Picasso, Cezanne and Mr Damien Hirst.

I bought a mixed CD called Namaste too.. which is great to paint to..

Anyway, that’s my sales spiel for today.

Artsy map of the Internet

Having fun with this map – but let’s not get cought up in the IRC Isles or, for god sake, stuck in the Ocean of SubCulture.  Ha, ha.
Good take on the Web, and done, creatively, I might add.
